High school (Lukio)

At this moment there are more than ten high schools offering education in Finnish
They are situated in different parts of the city.

Education is aimed at young people who have finished basic education.
Teaching is free of charge.

For entering you must have basic education certificate. High schools in Turku usually also usually demand that average grade of theoretical subjects in the certificate is no less than 7.30. Some specialised high schools may also have a entrance examination. If Finnish is not the students native language, he/she must take a language test or proof his/her proficiency in some other way.

You apply for studies in high school through the joint application system in spring.

After finishing high school you will get a general upper secondary education certificate and matriculation examination certificate.
After high school students can seek admission to universities and other institutions of higher education.

Studies can be finished in two to four years. Studies include many compulsory courses. The student himself/herself chooses more courses. You have to finish no less than 75 courses.

Will students, who are non-Finnish speakers have a possibility to get support in their studies?  What kind?

High schools offer no special arrangements based on student being non-Finnish speaker. The student can take instead of Finnish as mother tongue course Finnish as second language syllabus. Central aim at teaching Finnish as second language is for the student to reach such proficiency level in Finnish that he/she can study full high school curriculum, and that it is possible for him/her to continue his/her studies and work in Finnish.
